Why does my baby need a baby head support pillow? How it will help in preventing flat head?
These pillows or head rests work by eliminating the pressure that is applied to the skull, through use of a hollowed out design. This provides balance and comfort, while also allowing adequate movement. Unlike a regular soft pillow as used by adults and older children, a specifically designed low-profile head rest should not elevate the baby’s head, nor should it act as a suffocation risk if the baby turns his/her face to the side.
Since there are various pillows to choose from, it is important that you review your options well. These pillows or head rests should only be used as directed and up to the age of 4 months. Once baby is able to roll they should not be used when sleeping. Head rests approved by regulatory health organisations such as the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) or the US FDA should be considered.
Also remember that you should give your baby enough ‘tummy time’ and use other techniques to reduce pressure to your baby’s head. If you ever notice any change in the shape of your baby’s head, you should seek medical advice.
